Capability maturity model (CMM/CMMI) for
IT and software industry
Overview
The Capability Maturity Model (CMM) and Capability Maturity
Model Integrated (CMMI) are model-based approaches to process
improvement. CMM is concerned with management and software engineering
practices whereas CMMI also addresses systems engineering and
integrated product development.
Capability Maturity Model® Integration (CMMI) is used to
guide process improvement across a project, a division, or an
entire organisation. CMMI integrates organisational functions,
sets process improvement goals and priorities, provides guidance
for quality processes, and provides a point of reference for
appraising current processes.
CMM and CMMI certification
CMMI is a model that judges the maturity of the software processes
of an organization. It helps identify key practices required
to increase maturity of these processes.
CMMI has evolved into a vital standard for assessing and improving
software processes. The standard is an effective means for documenting,
defining and measuring the maturity of the process.
CMM/CMMI addresses the process involved in the development of
software. It aims to aid organisations focus on process improvement
strategies. The assessment covers five maturity levels, which
include planning, engineering, management and maintenance of
software.
Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) results in improvements
in schedule and cost performance, product quality, return on
investment and other measures of performance outcome.

Benefits of adoption
There are numerous benefits to begin process improvement using
CMMI products.
|
|
Provides more detailed coverage
of the product life cycle than other process-improvement
products used. |
|
|
Promotes collaboration between
systems engineering and software engineering and shifts
the focus to the end product and its associated processes.
|
|
|
The flexibility built into
every CMMI model supports both staged and continuous approaches
to process improvement with common terminology, architecture,
and appraisal methods. |

Certification process |
Certification process
The certification process is a multiple-step process. The certification
cycle is described briefly:
|
|
Application for certification from client |
|
|
Offer from TUV India |
|
|
Offer acceptance from client and order
confirmation by TUV India |
 |
Preaudit (optional) |
 |
Certification audit |
 |
Issue of certificate on successful completion
of certification audit |
 |
Surveillance audits at defined interval |
 |
Recertification audit |
TUV's services
TUV has defined a formal appraisal methodology and has provided
a lead assessor certification program. This means that the assessment
results would be reasonably consistent and can be used to benchmark
against other organisations.
