Food safety
Overview
The food and beverage industry in India is undergoing a radical
change where great emphasis is being placed on maintaining
good hygiene practices. There is an increasing demand to develop
an effective food quality and safety management system.
A food safety standard can be implemented by having a documented
and effective quality management system with control over
factory environmental standards, products, processes and personnel.
TUV India's certification service encompasses the food processing,
handling, catering and transport systems. It covers production,
processing, selling and distribution systems of all edible
items. TUV India has partnered with a number of organisations
involved in food manufacture, processing and distribution
to help them achieve the necessary food safety standards.
Food safety certification
The highest quality is what it takes to ensure people's confidence
in the food industry. TUV India in association with TUV NORD
can provide the much-required competitive edge by providing
the following food related certifications:

HACCP
(Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points)
Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) is
a process control system that identifies and prevents
microbial, chemical and other hazards in food. Potential
food hazards could be biological (microbes); chemical
(toxin); or physical (adulterants). The certification
is designed to prevent problems before they occur and
to correct them as soon as they are detected. This preventive
system is recognised and respected by the scientific community
as well as international food quality organisations as
the most effective approach to the manufacture of safe
food. |
|
|
Benefits of adoption |
| |
|
HACCP identifies and prevents
hazards from contaminating food |
| |
|
It is based on sound science
and it places responsibility for ensuring food safety
on the food manufacturer or distributor |
| |
|
HACCP helps food companies
compete more effectively in the world market thereby reducing
barriers to international trade |

ISO
22000
The ISO 22000 standard defines the requirements of a food
safety management system covering all the organisations
in the food chain from "farm to fork", including
the catering and packaging companies. ISO 22000 is a safety
standard that is accepted and trusted the world over.
Organisations that implement the ISO 22000 standard demonstrate
compliance with all relevant regulator food safety requirements.
The intention of this standard is to plan, implement,
operate, maintain and update a food safety management
system aimed at providing food products that are safe
for the consumer. |
|
|
Benefits of adoption |
| |
|
Control of known food hazards |
| |
|
Continuous improvement of
an organisation's food safety management system |
| |
|
Expanded market access and
reduced costs |
| |
|
Improved overall performance |

International
food standard (IFS)
The
international food standard (IFS) has been created to
bring uniformity in the food industry. The IFS is a
uniform standard for companies supplying retailer
branded food products. The standard ensures food safety
and monitors food quality. It is applies to all the
steps during the processing of food products. TUV has
been assigned as a notifying body for the certification
and administration of the IFS.
TUV NORD CERT advises their clients that
any issued IFS-Certificates are only valid in
conjunction with the belonging entry in the IFS
Auditportal ( www.food-care) .
Certificates, not listed in the IFS Auditportal, are not
valid.

BRC
(British Retail Consortium) Global Food Standard
The BRC (British Retail Consortium) Global Standard has
been created to establish a standard for the supply of
food products and to act as a key piece of evidence for
retailers, and the brand owners to demonstrate 'due diligence'
in the face of potential prosecution by the enforcement
authorities.
This standard helps manufacturers, brand owners and the
retailers fulfill their legal obligations whilst ultimately
safeguarding the consumer. The standard comprehensively
covers all the areas of product safety and legality. |
|
|
The
standard covers the following topics: |
| |
|
HACCP system |
| |
|
Quality management |
| |
|
Factory environment standard
|
| |
|
Product and process control
|
Certification process
The certification process is a multiple-step process. The certification
cycle is described briefly:
|
|
Application for certification from client |
|
|
Offer from TUV India |
|
|
Offer acceptance from client and order
confirmation by TUV India |
 |
Preaudit (optional) |
 |
Certification audit |
 |
Issue of certificate on successful completion
of certification audit |
 |
Surveillance audits at defined interval |
 |
Recertification audit |
